Stand Up Paddleboarding on the Vézère River: A Complete Guide for Beginners

Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has become a popular water sport in recent years. Initially practiced on lakes and ponds, it’s also wonderful on calm rivers. And the Vézère River is an ideal playground for beginners.

What is Stand-Up Paddleboarding?

SUP is a large surfboard on which you stand and propel yourself using a long, single-bladed paddle. No motor, no sail: just body balance and arm strength. The activity is both very gentle (perfect for well-being) and physically engaging (core strengthening, balance, arm work).

Is it difficult to paddleboard?

No! But you do need a few minutes to get the hang of it at the beginning. Here’s how to do it:

  • Step 1: Get on the board on your knees first, in the center.
  • Step 2: Paddle slowly to find your balance.
  • Step 3: Once you’re comfortable, gradually stand up, one foot at a time.
  • Step 4: Place your feet shoulder-width apart, slightly flexed.
  • Step 5: Paddle along the side of the board and make a small backswing to steer.

If you fall, and it happens! Land flat on your back, not on the board, and get back up from the back. The Vézère River is shallow in places, but always gentle.

The advantages of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) on a calm river:

  • Panoramic view from a standing height – you can see much further than from a canoe.
  • A complete workout: core strengthening, balance training, arm and leg exercises.
  • A meditative activity – silence, nature, mindfulness.
  • Easily combined with a swim.

Who is it recommended for?

Stand-up paddleboarding on the Vézère River is recommended for adults and teenagers (around 12 years old and up). For younger children or those who aren’t comfortable with balance, canoeing remains the best option.

We offer paddleboards for shorter trips. If it’s your first time, choose a shorter route to start.

🌿 Our tip: On the Vézère River, the morning is the best time for paddleboarding: the surface is like a mirror, with no wind, and the scenery is breathtaking. In the early afternoon, a breeze can pick up, making SUP a bit more of a workout.
