Good news: no need to break the bank on the latest gear. Canoeing on the Vézère River is perfectly doable in casual attire. But a few details really make the difference between a perfect day and a less enjoyable experience.
The basic outfit: light and practical
Essentials to pack:
- A swimsuit – essential if you plan on taking a dip in the Vézère
- Shorts and a quick-drying t-shirt – avoid jeans, which are heavy and uncomfortable when wet
- A hat or cap – the sun is strong on the water, and UV reflection is significant
- A lightweight windbreaker – very useful on cool or windy days
Shoes: the detail that makes all the difference
This is the point we emphasize the most. You absolutely must wear shoes that stay securely on your feet. Why? Because the bottom of the Vézère is made of pebbles, sand, but also flint and sometimes branches. Getting in or out barefoot is taking an unnecessary risk.
The best options:
- Water shoes (aquashoes) – ideal
- Old sneakers – also very good, they’ll dry on the river
- Absolutely avoid: flip-flops, open sandals, or going barefoot
Sun protection: an eco-friendly essential
When canoeing, you are exposed to the sun both directly AND through reflection off the water. A double dose of UV rays that burns faster than you might think. Two options:
- Protective clothing (lightweight long sleeves, UV-protective type)
- Water-resistant sunscreen, preferably eco-friendly (without chemical filters to avoid polluting the river)
Useful accessories:
- Sunglasses attached to a cord (otherwise they might end up at the bottom of the river)
- A water bottle (we provide waterproof containers for your belongings)
- A snack or picnic if you’re planning a long day

🌿 Our tip: A glasses strap isn’t a tourist gimmick; it’s a necessity. Glasses fall off every season… and the bottom of the Vézère River doesn’t always give them back! For your valuables (phone, keys, wallet), we lend you a waterproof container. Take advantage of it.
