Is it safe to swim in the Vézère River? Water quality and swimming spots

This is often the first question we get asked when booking. And the answer is yes! The Vézère is a healthy river, suitable for swimming and water sports. Here’s how we know.

Monitored and analyzed water

The Vézère River undergoes regular bacteriological testing (at least twice a year). The results obtained on our stretch of the river, between Montignac and Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, are consistently good. The river is classified as safe for swimming and water sports.

A natural indicator: biodiversity

A healthy river is evident in the life that inhabits it. On the Vézère River, you’ll find:

• Populations of trout, perch, pike, and other fish species specific to clean waters
• Otters (discreet, but present!)
• Dragonflies and damselflies, indicators of good water quality
• Frogs and newts in calm areas

This biodiversity is the best indicator of the river’s health.

Our commitment: riverbank cleanup since 1998

Since the creation of our base, we have organized a major riverbank cleanup every year, in the spring or fall depending on the water level. The first cleanups resulted in the removal of large pieces of trash. Today, the amount collected is thankfully much more modest: awareness campaigns have paid off.

Our canoeing customers are invaluable allies: many don’t hesitate to pick up the small pieces of trash they come across during their trips. A wonderful gesture that we encourage!

A few rules for responsible swimming

• Do not throw anything into the river (packaging, food scraps)
• Respect the wildlife and plants along the riverbanks
• In case of a weather alert (flooding, storm), do not swim
