Imagine gliding along a river listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bordered by limestone cliffs and teeming with grey herons. This is what the Vézère offers you, every day of the season, from our base at Les 7 Rives in Montignac-Lascaux.
A river born in the Massif Central
The Vézère rises on the Millevaches plateau in Corrèze, near Meymac, at an altitude of 800 meters. It then flows for nearly 200 km before joining the Dordogne at Limeuil. Along the way, it winds through absolutely breathtaking landscapes: gorges, meanders known as “cingles” (from the Occitan word for “serpent”), alluvial plains, and picture-postcard villages.
Its main tributary is the Corrèze, and their confluence is located not far from Brive-la-Gaillarde. The section navigable for leisure, around Montignac, is classified as a Class 1 river: calm, peaceful, and ideal for all ages.
The Valley of Man: 40,000 Years of History Along the Vézère River
It’s no coincidence that the Vézère Valley was nicknamed “The Valley of Man” as early as the late 19th century. Archaeological discoveries have followed one another at an impressive pace: the caves of Font-de-Gaume, Combarelles, Lascaux… These sites earned the valley its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
From a canoe, you’ll paddle along the very banks that our ancestors walked 30,000 years ago. A truly awe-inspiring prospect!
Priceless Stories
The river holds more than just prehistory. A few interesting facts to know before you go:
- Navigation on the Vézère River has a long commercial history: barges once transported timber and cannons to Bordeaux.
- Dam and lock projects were developed to boost this trade… but the arrival of the railway changed everything. Some remnants can still be seen between Montignac and Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère.
- The Vézère is rich in gold: gold panning championships have even been held there!
- In May 2023, the French postal service, La Poste, issued a stamp depicting the Vézère at Saint-Léon. A real treat for philatelists…
The flora and fauna: companions on your aquatic adventure
You won’t be alone on the river. The Vézère is a true biodiversity corridor. Keep your eyes peeled for:
- Grey herons motionless at the water’s edge
- Kingfishers with electric blue iridescence
- Mallards and their nests
- Black kites soaring overhead
- Dragonflies, damselflies, and butterflies skimming the surface
- Muskrats making the occasional brief appearance
The banks are lined with poplars, oaks, and chestnut trees—a welcome, gentle shade on hot days.

🌿 Our tip: Get an early start! From 9 am onwards in July and August, the river is calmer and the wildlife more active. It’s also the best time for taking photos. And believe me, you won’t regret booking in advance through our online shop!
